East Lansing, Michigan – November 26th, 2012 – Protect America Inc., one of the nation’s leading home security companies, will be announcing the winner of the Michigan State University (MSU) edition of the Pay It Forward Challenge on Tuesday, November 27th, 2012.
Founded in 2011, the Pay It Forward Challenge seeks to connect small and locally oriented charities with advertising and marketing students at colleges and universities. While students are encouraged to raise funds, the Challenge aims to inspire a longer lasting influence through increased community awareness and involvement.
“Creating this connection between local charities and marketing students has been one of the most powerful things we’ve done as a company,” said Scott Fleming, executive vice president at Protect America. “The students at Michigan State have really stepped up and helped Lansing charities. We can’t wait to see their final presentations and announce a winner.”
Austin-based Protect America originally launched the Challenge at MSU in 2011. Students were asked to help local charities by developing and implementing comprehensive marketing strategies. In the first iteration of the Challenge, student teams raised more than $10,000 for their charities while creating updated websites, improving social media presence, and garnering local news coverage. The Challenge is now in its second semester at MSU and a winner will be announced this Tuesday.
“We’re impressed at the ingenuity and innovation demonstrated by MSU students,” said Melissa Walker, a Protect America spokeswoman who will be at Michigan State to announce a winner. “They’ve generated a substantial amount of money and awareness for their charities.”
Teams in the Challenge are awarded points when they raise funds or create useful marketing collateral for their charities. The team with the most points wins the Challenge and receives a prize from Protect America. This year’s teams created websites and logos for local charities while donating a bike rack valued at $850, electronic equipment, and more. Each member of the winning team will receive an iPad. All participants in the Challenge will receive a letter of recommendation from Protect America’s marketing department.
