Bengal, the cultural capital of India has lot of scope to offer to the national and international tourists. With chief minister taking first stand to boost Hooghly District Soon, there will be steps taken to increase Hoogly tourism.

Nov. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- In a rapid and brief tour to Chandernagore, chief minister of West Bengal Mamta Banerjee talked about the amazing possibilities of tourism in the erstwhile European Colonies in Hooghly district. The chief minister, who took the catamaran ride on the Hooghly for reaching Chandernagore to attend the Jagaddhatri puja, was also accompanied by Kolkata mayor Sovan Chatterjee during the tour.

After reaching Chandernagore, chief minister directly head to inaugurate the Urdi Bazar puja organized by Trinamool MLA Ashok Sau. After completing the inauguration ceremony of puja, chief minister avowed, "It appears that Chandernagore has become mini India with people from different parts of India and the world become part of festive occasion.“

The district of Hooghly comes from the name of town of Hooghly positioned on the west bank of Hooghly River, which lays around 40 km north of Kolkata. In the 15th century, the town was prominent river port, and the first European to approach was Portuguese sailor Vasco-Da-Gama. In the year 1536 Portuguese traders acquired a permit from Sultan Mahmud Shah for trading in this area and this transformed it into major commercial center and the largest port in Bengal. It was in the year 1579-80 Emperor Akbar provided the permission to Portuguese captain Pedro Tavares for establishing the city anywhere in the Bengal province, and Hooghly was chosen which ultimately turned out to be the foremost European settlement in Bengal.

Mamata queried the possibilities of tourism and its promotion along the banks of river Hooghly, which in the yesteryears have been witness to the colonial rule in India. Enroute the Chandernagore, also stopped to find out the progress of land allotted for the foundation of film city at Uttarpara and suggested mayor Sovan Chatterjee to expedite the process so that Kolkata film industry gets the boost.

While speechifying, Mamata wasted no time to emphasize that she is staunch believer of all religious programmes and champions true secularism. "I have learnt to respect all religions," she openly exclaimed.  There was also an element of confusion and distrust when many of the Puja organizers were disheartened to find that chief minister was not visiting their pandals, as they had already made whopping arrangements. The well-known pujas along Hooghly district comprises Bagbazar, Barobazar, Tetultala and Laxmiganj Bazar. The Laxmiganj Bazar puja was once conducted by the Raja Krishnanchandra of Krishnanagore.

In general, Mamata and the puja organizers all had a good time. However, there were others who all the time concentrated on safety and security of Mamta Banerjee and her entire entourage. The prominent officials included district magistrate Manpreet Nanda and superintendent of police, Tanmoy Roy chowdhury, were all the time seen making spontaneous arrangements.
