Nov. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- Thanksgiving morning races are special. They are often reunions for families and friends who are home for the holiday. Thanksgiving Turkey Trots provide an opportunity to get some exercise in before the big Thanksgiving meal later in the day.
These races are often huge events, with thousands of participants.

Here are a few of New Jersey's best Thanksgiving Runs:

The Dick Meighan Memorial Thanksgiving Day Run in Upper Saddle River

The 14th Dick Meighan Memorial Run, a Bergen County Thanksgiving tradition, will be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012 at the Cavallini Middle School, 392 West Saddle River Road, Upper Saddle River, New Jersey.

Entry fees are $25 for pre-registration, $30 on race day. There is a 7:30-8:45 am check-in, and the 5K run starts at 9:00 am.

The race is organized by the Upper Saddle River Recreation Commission and will follow the format of previous races, featuring individual and family team competition. To support and reward the participation of young people, age divisions are: 10-and-under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, 19-24, 25-29.

The LOU LUPINACCI AWARD, initiated in 2011, in memory of Upper Saddle resident Lou Lupinacci, will be awarded to the youngest girl and the youngest boy to run or walk across the finish line with no assistance. The award is sponsored by the Bauer/Guild/ Mazzutto Family.

The run was inaugurated after the September 11, 1999 death of Upper Saddle River resident Dick Meighan who was a long time resident and active participant in community life. He was a coach to hundreds in a variety of sports which spanned the ages and interests of his four children.

Proceeds from the event continue to benefit the local community, including D.A.R.E., the SRV Rescue Squad, Ambulance Corps and Fire Department, USR Education Foundation, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, USR Youth Triathlon, Shelter Our Sisters, Oasis, Children's Therapy Center, The Rose Foundation of Haiti, and the "Extra Mile" Scholarship Fund. Total donations exceed $200,000.

This event attracts runners from all over North Jersey, Rockland, Weschrster and beyond. It provides much Thanksgiving Day joy to thousands of runners and their families.
