Winchester Collage Artist Wins First Prize at 17th Annual Art Ability Exhibition

John M. Williams, a Winchester, MA artist who specializes in fine art collage, has won first prize at this year’s Art Ability Exhibition and Sale for his collage entitled Billy Yank.

Nov. 15, 2012 - PRLog -- WINCHESTER, Mass. -- John M. Williams, a Winchester, MA artist who specializes in fine art collage, has won first prize at this year’s Art Ability Exhibition and Sale.  John’s piece, entitled Billy Yank, won the Thomas and Harriet Blank Award for 1st prize in the Works on Paper category.  

Billy Yank will be on display at the 2012 Art Ability Exhibition and Sale along with three other of John’s works  – General William Tecumseh Sherman, Frederick Douglass and Johnny Reb at Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, 414 Paoli Pike, Malvern, PA through January 20, 2013.

The Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital’s Art Ability Program is an integral program of the hospital and a year-round showcase and celebration of artists with disabilities. In its 17th year, the program includes the country’s largest international juried exhibition and sale of fine art and crafts created by artists with cognitive, physical, hearing and visual disabilities. This year’s Art Ability Exhibition features over 300 works by 200 artists from 33 states and 6 foreign countries.

Three accomplished Philadelphia area arts leaders selected this year's prize winners:

· Adelina Vlas, Assistant Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art

· Alida Fish, Dean of the University of the Arts. Philadelphia, PA and an Internationally known Photographer

· Tu Huynh, Curator, City Hall, Philadelphia, PA

John M. Williams specializes in portrait collages of great historical figures with a special interest in Civil War art. He creates intriguing collages by piecing together small cut pieces of paper to create a likeness of his subject that reveals the person’s character as well as their historical significance.

John’s work has been featured in a solo show at the Outsider Folk Art Gallery in Reading, PA as well as the Outsider Art Show in New York, the SOFA show in Chicago and exhibits throughout New England. He is also featured in a book by Jill Mullin entitled, Drawing Autism (http://markbattypublisher.com/books/drawing-autism/).

John is a member of the Concord Art Association, the Folk Art Society of America and the Civil War Roundtable of Greater Boston.
