Nov. 9, 2012 - PRLog -- Fall and fundraising have become synonymous around The Buckingham senior living community as the turn of the season kicks off a new year of raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. Residents, family members, and employees of The Buckingham gathered to support efforts to end Alzheimer’s disease in the annual Houston Walk to End Alzheimer’s.  The fundraising efforts resulted in a total donation by The Buckingham of over $26,403 to the Houston and Southeast Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, making them the top fundraiser for 2012. The final donation from The Buckingham will include a gift from the Senior Quality Lifestyles Corporation (SQLC) Charitable Foundation which plans to match a portion of the funds raised by residents and staff.

“The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is an event that our residents and staff look forward to each year,” said Cathy Lightfoot, director of sales and marketing at The Buckingham.  “It proves to be a wonderful way for the entire community to come together for a great cause. This year, we were all excited about the new events that we added to raise as much money as possible for the Alzheimer’s Association.”

In the months leading up to the walk, The Buckingham hosted a series of events to raise funds and awareness for the cause. Some of this year’s unique fundraising events included a crazy cocktail hour, a $1 bake sale, Oktoberfest for Alzheimer’s at Liesner Farm and a pep rally ice cream party the day before the walk. The community also brought back the ever popular pet contest in which residents and staff made donations to vote on their favorite community pet.

The Buckingham’s sister communities, Edgemere in Dallas, Querencia at Barton Creek in Austin, and The Stayton at Museum Way in Fort Worth also participated in their respective cities Walk to End Alzheimer’s events.  With all four communities fundraising efforts and the match from the SQLC Charitable Foundation, SQLC will have raised more than $73,104 for the Alzheimer’s Association this year.

In 2008, SQLC founded the SQLC Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that operates to make grants to and support programs and services that advance the interests of seniors, from Alzheimer’s research to education.
