Nov. 9, 2012 - PRLog -- The dialysis injury lawyers Bond & Taylor launched a new campaign today to help patients injured by dialysis. Recently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled two popular dialysis concentrates, GranuFlo®and NaturaLyte® in response to reports of alleged dialysis injuries. The law firm of Bond & Taylor is encouraging patients who have been injured by dialysis or the families who have lost loved ones to dialysis injury to call and obtain help today.

GranuFlo® and NaturaLyte® are two popular dialysis concentrates that were manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care, who also ran the largest network of dialysis care centers in America. These popular concentrates were used to treat an estimated 1/3 of the 400,000 Americans receiving dialysis treatment every year. GranuFlo®and NaturaLyte® were used to lower acid build up in the blood, but some doctors were unaware of their elevated bicarbonate levels. Because of the elevated bicarbonate levels in these concentrates, this caused alkalosis, resulting in heart attacks. In 2010, Fresenius Medical Care observed over 900 heart attacks during dialysis treatment. In response, the company issued a company- wide memo to alert its doctors to new dosage recommendations. This same health communication was not shared outside of the network.

When the FDA became aware of these observed adverse health reactions, the FDA recalled these drugs on March 29, 2012. In this Class 1 FDA recall, the FDA warned of the high potential for dialysis injury, including the risk of heart attack and death. As part of the recall, the FDA required Fresenius to issue an urgent product communication to warn caregivers of dosage recommendations. Said partner Andrew Wright, “We’ve taken calls from the families of patients who had a heart attack and died in the chair. The patient was never aware of any critical health information or warnings of dialysis injury. We think patients and caregivers should have had equal access to this potentially lifesaving information and we’d like to help families who are suffering as a result of not having this information.”

Consumers who have suffered dialysis injury are encouraged to call the law firm of Bond & Taylor to receive a free consultation to determine eligibility for compensation.
