Nov. 9, 2012 - PRLog -- This week saw the people of America opt for ‘four more years’ and a second term of presidency for the charismatic Barrack Obama.  Sometimes more of the same is better than change and on this occasion the United States decided to stick with what they have, rather than opt for something new.

Sometimes nothing is better than a refreshing change, but then of course there has to be a balance and constant change would simply result in chaos.  Although, perhaps clothing is just about as far away from presidency as physically possible, everything in life is connected, and our consumer culture is directly linked to politics and more so, of course, the economy.

One the of the biggest challenges facing President Obama in his first four year term was the global economic crisis.  Of course, no-one can be directly blamed for a crisis, which took place due to a variety of complex reasons, but opposition will of course criticise the recovery approach.

Optimism: This Year’s Buzzword

Optimism has been the buzz word this year, and this has continued throughout the US presidential elections, and although of course only little over half of the voters saw their man elected, the reaction was generally positive from both sides.

This optimism is something that has been missing from mainstream media for too long, and too often negativity and pessimism have dominated.  Although of course the economic crash has had a profound impact on many people’s lives, there is certainly no reason to feel defeated.

One aspect of the crash of course has been the reduction in consumerism and a more conservative approach to spending.  With Christmas creeping up on us like an unwelcome tax bill, it is time to deploy optimism once more, and to ride on the crest of positivity and progression.

Changing Consumerism Culture

Change always must be seen as a positive.  It is a fundamental rule of progression.  Even at the most challenging times, optimism can reign supreme and help to turn things around.

The economic crash, in reality, was a harsh lesson in consumerist culture, and was indeed long overdue.  A false sense of economic security and invincibility had rendered most of us slaves to a capitalist and consumerist system, making us part with our cash without any level of balance or control.  What the crash has done is force us to reconsider our approach, and in doing so reclaim control over our finances.

Balance is the Key

The crucial aspect of this new consumerism culture is balance.  Out with the old and in with the new.  Although initially this may seem like a lot of hard work compared to our past nonchalance, over time it may well reveal itself to be a much more interesting pastime.

Selling and customising old clothes, cash for gold schemes, online bargain hunting and home shopping social events are all key components to successful shopping this Christmas.  Balancing budget building with bargain buying is the balance required to create a superb and sustainable celebration.
