An innovative simulation system, for remotely managing CRBN and HazMat simulation exercises, is being launched for the first time by Argon Electronics (http://www.argonelectronics.com/) at this year’s I/ITSEC conference in Orlando, Florida (http://www.iitsec.org/Pages/default.aspx).   Called PlumeSIM (http://www.argonelectronics.com/products/plumesim/), the new system has been developed for use by military and first responder training organisations as well as industrial concerns such as nuclear power generators. It enables a single instructor to configure simulated chemical and radiological releases across a wide area, and then to monitor and manage multiple trainees in real time from a central location.

PlumeSIM is a powerful yet easy to use training tool.  The system allows virtual dispersal plumes and hot spots to be set up quickly and simply.  There are multiple scenario options including the type of threat, the point of release or delivery mechanism from single or multiple sources, and a full range of constant or changing environmental conditions. Persistency, deposition, time of release or detonation can also be controlled by the instructor.

The exercise area can also be configured, using standard maps or hand drawn sketches of the training area.  Once configured, all exercises can be saved for future use and revision.  These can be run in either a classroom environment for table top exercises, with trainees using standard gamepad controllers to manipulate their positions on-screen with actual simulators responding according to the simulated threat, or as a field based training system.

In field training mode, PlumeSIM works with a variety of high fidelity simulation instruments and GPS enabled Players to allow the instructor to monitor the movement and actions of students and to make real time adjustments to training scenario.

Student errors are reported to the instructor in real time and are also recorded.  Once the training exercise is complete the instructor can replay the various exercises, providing valuable feedback and advice to students.

PlumeSIM is a modular system, so can be upgraded as required, and is designed for use with all simulation instruments from Argon, including M4 JCAD-SIM, CAMSIM, AP2/4C-SIM, RDS200-SIM, EPD-Mk2-SIM, AN/PDR-77-/VDR-2 / RDS100-SIM, and SAM935 / 940 Spectrometer Simulator. The transportable nature of PlumeSIM makes it an ideal choice for Home Station CBRN training.

Argon Electronics

Argon Electronics was established in 1987 and has since become a world leader in the development and manufacture of hazardous material detector simulators, most notably in the fields of military Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) defence. Our simulators have applications from civil response to unconventional terrorism and accidental release, and international treaty verification, with a growing presence in the nuclear energy generation and education markets.
