Oct. 31, 2012 - PRLog -- Meningitis attorney Kevin Landry announced to his clients that the fungal meningitis outbreak has finally struck the state Rhode Island according to a report released by The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The meningitis outbreak, which has occurred as a result of contaminated drug vials from a compounding lab in Framingham, Massachusetts, has now affected 19 states.

Although the exact details surrounding the Rhode Island meningitis victim is unknown, Mr. Landry cautions anyone in Rhode Island who has received injections, particularly those that are steroid based injections for treatment of pain, to seek medical attention immediately should they experience any signs or symptoms even remotely resembling meningitis.

“According to The Centers for Disease Control, there are only five states not yet affected by the outbreak are California, Nevada, West Virginia, Massachusetts and Connecticut. But with over 14,000 vials of contaminated medicine distributed, it’s just a matter of time for those states report cases as well”, stated Mr. Landry.

Meningitis Attorney Reports More Deaths

The recent outbreak of fungal meningitis, which has been linked to vials of steroid injections from the specialty compounding pharmacy The New England Compounding Center, has not only infected a new state, but is now linked to more fatalities as well. The Centers for Disease Control stated that three more people have died from the meningitis outbreak, bringing the death count directed attributed to the outbreak to 28.

“The CDC”, the Rhode Island and Massachusetts meningitis attorney went on to say, “also reported that there are 363 current non-fatal cases in Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. According to the CDC, Tennessee has the dubious distinction of having the most cases - with a total of 11 so far”.

In response to the meningitis outbreak, all products from the New England Compounding Center have been recalled and the pharmacy in Framingham, Massachusetts has been shut down.

“Rumors abound that the New England Compounding Center pharmacy will declare bankruptcy”, Landry stated. “And according to reports, they have also retained legal counsel for what surely will be an onslaught of lawsuits and wrongful death cases against them, but this doesn’t mean victims shouldn’t contact an attorney to understand their rights – in fact, the sooner they consult with a meningitis attorney after diagnosis and treatment, the better”, he advised.

As was reported by the Food and Drug Administration, staffers at the specialty pharmacy documented dozens of infractions of mold and bacteria in clean rooms and sterile pharmaceutical preparation areas. There has been no evidence that the New England Compounding Center made any attempts to correct the situation.

Meningitis Attorney Advises What You Need to Do If You Feel You've Been Infected

“The very first thing you should do if you feel you’ve been infected is recognize the symptoms of meningitis and then seek medical treatment immediately”, the Massachusetts and Rhode Island personal injury lawyer declared.

Symptoms of meningitis include severe headache, nausea, dizziness, confusion, sensitivity to light and fever. But meningitis oftentimes takes weeks to start exhibiting symptoms, so if you feel you may have been infected, seek medical attention immediately.

"Speed of diagnosis and speed of treatment are the two keys to a successful clinical outcome", Landry stated.

Although the final figure for infected Rhode Island meningitis victims is unknown, Mr. Landry cautions anyone who has received injections, particularly those that are steroid based injections for treatment of pain, to seek medical attention immediately should they experience any signs or symptoms even remotely resembling meningitis.

Meningitis Attorney Warns of More Fatalities

"The 28th fatality", the Massachusetts and Rhode Island meningitis attorney went on to say, "died due to a rare kind of meningitis known as fungal meningitis and was receiving injections of steroids to treat back pain".

"The New England Compounding Center is most certainly liable for the still evolving damage it has caused to patient lives and has acted irresponsibly in the way in which it has handled this unprecedented meningitis outbreak", Landry stated. "Physicians and/or hospital which may have misdiagnosed or mistreated patients can be held liable as well", he continued.

If you have been infected or know someone who has been infected with meningitis, seek medical treatment immediately. Then contact a meningitis lawyer who has experience and a proven track record of results with medical malpractice cases. A meningitis attorney well-versed in personal injury law pertaining to medical malpractice can assist you with your claim, should you choose to pursue one.
