My first encounter with ibuprofen was very many years ago when as a young osteopath,my good friend,an eminent dentist, had extracted a tooth.
He gave me a trial box of a new and amazing anti inflammatory drug called "nurofen".
It wasnt on sale at this time but was on the final leg of its trials(prior to being sold as an over the counter drug) and was being given by dentists and doctors.
It was very effective on my dental pain and I was immediately impressed by its swift action and effectiveness.
It had been around as Brufen for some time but was only given by prescription.(It was patented as a drug in 1961)
As an anti inflammatory,I am far happier recommending it for my patients than Diclofenac, which can cause awful GI tract discomfort, often long term.
I feel it is not within the scope of this article to delve into side effects and contraindications,as many other more detailed webpages offer this information.
However the one warning I will give is asthmatic patients, for whom ibuprofen could precipitate an attack, and in extreme cases may prove fatal. The same applies for renal problems.
The practitioner recommending this drug should acquaint themselves with contraindications and side effects before advising their patients to use ibuprofen, and if in any doubt, advise them to speak to their doctor first.
I use it in cases where we have an inflammatory problem associated with the condition.
We may use ultrasound,laser,hot/cold packing etc,but a wise and appropriate use of ibuprofen is always a great help, especially where we may,for example, adjust a number of vertebrae and find the inflammation has built up in the area.
Before our next treatment ,we want as much inflammation gone so our prudent adjustments have the desired effect without the inflammation hindering pain recovery.
We may appear useless to our patient if we do amazing adjustments, realign the pelvis and treat the resultant muscle spasm,if the inflammation lingers and leaves them in the same pain!!!!
WE know it will eventually subside as the CAUSE has gone, but our patient just wants rid of his/her pain as quickly as possible, and really does not understand why they are still in pain.
After all is said and argued over ,one must ask why the patient has come to us....to be rid of pain..simple
