Oct. 29, 2012 - PRLog -- Dale Carnegie of Southeastern Michigan has joined forces with John W. Barfield, the founder of the Bartech Group., one of America’s largest black-owned companies, to introduce the Dale Carnegie Barfield Entrepreneurial & Leadership Development Program for the advancement of education and skill development in urban areas.

The program, designed to interest students in business ownership and the development of leadership skills, will be launched at Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA) at an orientation to be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, from 4 to 6 p.m.  “Expanding Visions for Success” is the theme of Tuesday’s orientation event.

DEPSA, located at 1903 Wilkins St. in Detroit, is a public charter school founded by Edison Learning in 1998. (The school has never been affiliated with Detroit Edison Co., or its parent, DTE Energy.)

"The Dale Carnegie Barfield Entrepreneurial & Leadership Development Program
will provide students with the tools and strategies needed to reach their full potential,” said Brandon Marsh, Dale Carnegie Performance Consultant and Coach, who co-developed the program with Barfield and will assist with its implementation.

“Dale Carnegie is delighted to introduce this program in collaboration with Mr. Barfield, a legendary entrepreneur who is passionate about preparing young people for success in life,” Marsh said.

Barfield will focus on “Dreaming Big!” as he share insights from nearly 60 years as a business owner and civic leader at the orientation event on Tuesday. The Bartech Group, based in Livonia, Mich., is a global leader in the workforce management industry, and was ranked 18th on Black Enterprise magazine’s 2012 list of the top 100 black-owned industrial / service firms.

Major contributors to the Dale Carnegie / Barfield project include Barfield; Ralph C. Bland, CEO of New Paradigm Schools and Superintendent of the nationally recognized DEPSA; and Ralph Nichols, CEO of Dale Carnegie Training of Michigan, who has played a key role in this program’s development.

Other individuals who have helped to develop the program include Brooke Franklin, Director of the Detroit Regional Chamber Educational Engagement Project, who introduced the program to DEPSA; and Mark Will, Partner and Master Trainer at Dale Carnegie of Southeastern Michigan.

Dale Carnegie Training of Southeastern Michigan is placing a major emphasis on helping students who live in Detroit.  For the past three years, the city of Detroit has consistently maintained an unemployment rate of 20 percent, with few signs of improvement.  In addition to high unemployment rates, Detroit’s high school dropout rate hovers around 60 to70 percent.

In the words of U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Detroit Public Schools are “arguably the worst urban school district in the country.” But on the upside, Duncan also has referred to the Detroit Public Schools as “Ground Zero for education in this country.”

With reform policies and other big changes in the works for city schools, Mr. Duncan has been quoted as saying: “I’m more optimistic today about Detroit’s future than probably any time in the past two and a half years.”

As Detroit positions itself for revitalization, addressing unemployment through education must be a top priority.  Because of this fact, Dale Carnegie Training of Southeastern Michigan is making every effort to bridge the gap.

Dale Carnegie of Southeastern Michigan is a franchise of the Dale Carnegie Training organization.  Founded in 1912, Dale Carnegie Training has evolved from one man's belief in the power of self-improvement to a performance-based training company with offices worldwide. We focus on giving people in business the opportunity to sharpen their skills and improve their performance in order to build positive, steady, and profitable results.
