An Unusual World Series Bet - Giants or Tigers?

An Unusual World Series Bet – Miller’s East Coast Deli of San Francisco and United Meat and Deli of Detroit Bet on Outcome of the World Series to Benefit Local Charities

Oct. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- October 27th, 2012 - San Francisco, CA - Plenty of people are making wagers on the outcome of the 2012 World Series, but none more socially conscious than a bet between San Francisco’s favorite deli, Miller’s East Coast Delicatessen, and their meat distributor, United Meats and Deli of Detroit. East Coast transplants and those who have dined there still salivate at the mere mention of indescribably delicious gastronomical wonders from traditional East Coast delicatessens. Miller’s East Coast Delicatessen is San Francisco’s only authentic East Coast Jewish deli. The original restaurant is located on Polk Street and recently opened its second location in San Rafael as Miller’s East Coast Delicatessen Marin, in the Montecito Shopping Center. You could go to a normal deli and get a plain sandwich, or you could go to Miller’s and get the best sandwich of your life.

Miller's Deli has entered into a wager with Sy Ginsberg's United Meat and Deli in Detroit, Michigan. Sy Ginsberg is known by many in the deli business as one of the best and as the guy who started the company that makes the Pastrami and Corned Beef for Miller's as well as restaurants all across the USA. The company in the city of the losing team will donate to the Jewish Charity of choice of the company in the winning city. The two owners, Robby Morgenstein of Miller’s and Sy Ginsberg of United Meat are both big baseball fans, and when the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers made it into the 2012 World Series, the two decided to make a friendly wager on the outcome of the series. They decided that rather than a traditional bet with each other personally, they would donate to a charity in the other’s city.

Sy Ginsberg grew up with pickle juice and spicy mustard practically coursing through his veins. He started working in a deli at age fifteen cleaning out pickle barrels and went on to run two very successful delicatessens in Detroit before founding United Meat & Deli in 1982. Sy wanted his customers to have an authentic deli experience. He wanted to bring every nuance, every flavor, to their collective palate. He started with perfecting his corned beef brisket and the rest, as they say, is history. The brand has gained popularity throughout the Midwest and across North America, but at its core, it still strives to create products that honor the memory of the storefront delicatessen. United Meat & Deli is deli done right.

Miller’s East Coast Delicatessen has finest of freshly home cooked turkey, roast and corned beef, pastrami, and roast brisket, as well as brand name deli meats, atop fresh and chewy rye bread for the best mouth-watering sandwiches west of the Mississippi.  In addition, Miller’s offers the widest variety of smoked fish - and the only establishment to offer real Belly Lox - in Northern California.  But sandwiches and smoked fish are the mere tip of the iceberg to the massive menu of old world deli comfort cuisine unparalleled in its array and diversity.  Sturdy hot plates, stuffed cabbage, chopped liver, kasha varnishkes, potato latkes, blintzes, knishes, freshly made salads, sauerkraut, matzo brei and matzo ball soup, crisp and tart giant pickles, rugelach (packed with nuts and sugar crystals), and an abundant array of desserts, including Black and White cookies, and, yes, even real New York bagels.

Miller’s is so popular in San Francisco that Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan “Bud” Selig stopped by to have lunch at Miller’s on Thursday October 26th, 2012. He vowed to return if the series came back to San Francisco.
