Demetria Graves Arranges AIDS Walk for Black Women Lawyers Association & Langston Bar Association

Oct. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- Demetria Graves was proud to arrange an AIDS Walk team for the Black Women Lawyer Association and the Langston Bar Associations for which she is a board member. The Black Women Lawyer Association of Los Angeles is a non-profit corporation that was founded in 1975 after a small group of Los Angeles based African-American women attorneys and judges addressed the marked absence of an organization that addressed the issues that African-American women face in the legal profession.

BWL dedicates its efforts to a variety of charitable, educational, and community based services including the AIDS Walk that was held on October 14, 2012. BWL and the Langston Bar Association partnered with one another to increase the support for AIDS research and awareness. According to the BWL, African Americans are afflicted with HIV more than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States, and despite the fact that African-Americans represent only 14% of the US population (as of 2009), they accounted for 44% of all new HIV infections in that year. When compared to all other races and ethnicities, African Americans accounted for the highest proportion of HIV infections at all stages of the disease. As of 2009, black women accounted for 30% of the new HIV infections that were among all blacks, and the rate of HIV infections among black women were 15 times greater than they were for white women.

The BWL’s AIDS Walk was held on October 14, 2012 in West Hollywood from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. The fundraising event was a huge success where thousands participated. Over $1,000 was raised for the cause during the event.

In 1992, the BWL Foundation was established to both support and fund the BWL’s numerous educational, charitable, and community-based activities and services. In addition to supporting AIDS research, the BWL gives holiday food baskets to families in needs, they donate to shelters for battered women and the homeless, and they continue to expand their outreach to Los Angeles schools. Since 1975, the BWL has donated more than $100,000 in scholarships and grants to second and third year law students as well.
