13 animal shelters, 72 puppies & 1 iPhone app have changed the face of weather, is fundraising next?
Weather Puppy, a free iPhone Weather app that makes you smile every time you check the weather, launched Sunday. It's partnered with thirteen non-profit animal shelters across the country. It's currently the 6th most downloaded iPhone weather app.
Thirteen non-profit animal shelters across the country are involved in helping Weather Puppy pioneer digital delivery of customized content, as they envision new methods of engaging their constituents, possibly including fundraising.
“The big game changer for the charities is that most are going to sell their own branded themes within the app – giving them a way to fundraise by selling digital content. Most already fundraise by selling physical calendars so this is an easy progression for them and one that opens them up to donors across the country,” says Suraj Hemnani, co-founder of Weather Puppy.
At the time of writing Weather Puppy is the 6th most downloaded free iPhone weather app in the country. The app currently includes four pre-baked themes (Outdoorsy, Glamour, Fall Colors, Halloween) of which the first two are free and the second two cost $0.99 each. It also includes an “Add Your Own Doggy” theme for $0.99.
The non-profit animal shelters involved are Paws4You (Miami, FL), Pennsylvania SPCA, San Diego Humane Society (CA), San Antonio Humane Society (TX), Austin Humane Society (TX), Tampa SPCA (FL), The Anti-Cruelty Society (Chicago, IL), Broward Humane Society (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), Animal Humane New Mexico, Humane Society of Utah, Detroit Dog Rescue, Animal Haven Shelter (NYC) and Mohawk Humane Society (NY). Weather Puppy is looking to add even more partners over the coming months.
Weather Puppy was created by the Miami-based duo of Shiv Takhar and Suraj Hemnani. It started as a cute, fun project but then they realized that they could do better than cute, that they could make a difference.
Will it work? Suraj thinks so, “forget the banks, this is too cute to fail.”
