The program is part of Valley Pediatric Dentistry’s commitment to encouraging good nutritional habits. The primary goal is to reduce the amount of unhealthy sweets our children get this time of year and to also show support for our military men and women. Last year, the office collected more than 1,500 pounds of Halloween candy, and this year, the goal is to increase that amount to over a ton of candy! Valley Pediatric Dentistry, P.C., will be collecting candy from November 1-8, 2012. Families are asked to bring their Halloween candy into their office, they will then weigh each child’s candy, and pay each child $1 per pound ($5 max). Many people decide to simply donate their candy, knowing that the candy is being sent to “Operation Support Our Troops” (www.osotamerica.org ), a non-profit organization that sends care packages to service men and women deployed overseas. In conjunction with their traditional Halloween Candy Buy Back Program, this year Valley Pediatric Dentistry, P.C. has expanded its program to various elementary school PTA’s in the local area. An invitation has been extended to several local PTA organizations inviting their school community to participate in the program as well. Valley Pediatric Dentistry will donate $100 to each PTA who participates in this year’s program. Aside from the charitable aspect of this program, the Valley Pediatric Dentistry team is driven to reduce the cavity causing effects Halloween candy produces in children this time of year. “Our number one recommendation is to avoid or limit sticky candy such as taffy and caramels, along with gummy candy and lollipops, which coat teeth with tons of sugar,” said Dr. Jennifer Blair, D.M.D., of Valley Pediatric, P.C., “As a general rule, the worst foods for teeth are those that contain large amounts of sugar, are sticky, or high in carbohydrate content.” “Dr. Jen”, as her patients like to call her, provides the following list of “eat-this, not-that” types of treats that parents should encourage their kids to select, in moderation, when sorting through their trick-or-treat bags: · Chocolates · Sugar-free candy/gum · Chips/pretzels For more information on Valley Pediatric Dentistry, or to contribute your extra Halloween candy to their buy-back program, please contact them at: Jefferson Valley Office 3630 Hill Boulevard, Suite 401 Jefferson Valley, NY 10535 914-245-7100 www.doctorbendds.com About Valley Pediatric Dentistry P.C.
