Oct. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- As the fields of Zilker Park become quiet after ACL, many festival goers are enjoying the week after the bands without ringing in their ears due to the generosity of Estes Audiology Hearing Centers.  For during the 3-day festival, Estes Audiology in tandem with the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) gave away earplugs at the HAAM/SIMS Foundation’s ACL Cares booth. Over 500 pairs of reusable earplugs made out of compressible foam and donated by Estes Audiology were given to festival-goers free of charge so that these music lovers could enjoy the music while simultaneously protecting their hearing.

“Risk of overexposure to loud music and the potential for damage to one’s ear during ACL’s 3 day festival is a reality.   With several bands going on one time, it is difficult to find a place at ACL where you are not bombarded with sound.  To remedy this situation, we at Estes Audiology decided to help people protect their hearing by donating earplugs,” said Soriya Estes, Au.D., owner and founder of Estes Audiology. “Wearing earplugs significantly reduces a person’s risk to permanent hearing loss.”

Hearing loss occurs not only because of listening to loud music but also due to the direct correlation between the length of time that one listens to loud music and the decibel level of that music.  The longer one hears loud music, the more potential for loss of hearing.  At rock concerts, the decibel level can reach up to than 130 db –putting one’s hearing at risk.  Add to the decibel level, an extended length of time attending a concert, and one’s potential for hearing loss is exacerbated.  It takes only few hours of deafening music to cause permanent damage to your ears.

Due to overexposure to loud sound, many musicians and music lovers alike may experience noise-induced or nerve-related, hearing loss, which is caused by damage in the cochlea or the nerve pathway from the inner ear to the brain.  Such damage is preventable.  This potential for irreversible hearing loss is why prevention is so important.

“Over 500 earplugs were given away which we consider a huge success.  It thrilled us to see festival-goers wearing earplugs provided by Estes Audiology throughout the three-day festival.  We feel fortunate to C3 Productions and HAAM for allowing us to assist in making ACL both fun and hearing-safe,” stated Dr. Estes.
