Oct. 24, 2012 - PRLog -- While bipolar disorder is often viewed as a lifetime disorder, for hundreds of thousands, if not closer to one-million Americans who have or who have had bipolar disorder, not only has recovery and remission been possible, but it has been attained.

One of the keys to winning in the battle against symptoms of bipolar disorder is self-determination. Two authors of note who have written on this subject are Mary Copeland, who, along with her mother, both struggled with serious mental health problems. Copeland recovered and went on to become a prolific writer and mental health advocate. She encourages self determination in the struggle with symptoms of bipolar disorder, that is, taking positive, proactive steps yourself, not just waiting for the medicine to kick in; we need to take actions, make changes in our lives and develop personal coping skills. Learning to handle and circumvent stress is a key element to overcoming bipolar disorder, as one example.  Positive Lifestyle Changes (PLC) are an important component of recovery from mental health disorders including bipolar disorder.

A second author who reached a similar conclusion after years of struggling with bipolar disorder, who was on a plethora of different medications, but unsuccessful in making real progress, is Julie Fast. Fast discovered that it was only when she made up her mind towards taking positive actions, serious changes in her own life, that she really began to make progress in overcoming the negative symptoms of bipolar disorder.

Self determination, that is taking your life in your own hands, working hard for good mental health, and making positive life changes, are crucial in recovery for bipolar disorder.
