SEM Link Celebrates National Chemistry Week by engaging youth in hands on chemistry activities

Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc. (SEM Link) celebrates National Chemistry week by conducting hands on chemistry activities with K-8 students in after-school programs and classrooms in urban areas.
Oct. 23, 2012 - PRLog -- National Chemistry Week (NCW) is October 21-27, 2012 and our Math and Science Career Academy will be sending members of our board and staff and our volunteers to after-school programs and classrooms in Atlanta, DMV Area (DC, Maryland and Virginia) and the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct hands on chemistry activities with K-8 students. National Chemistry Week encourages chemists and chemistry enthusiasts to build awareness of chemistry to promote the value of chemistry in everyday life.  This year is the 25th anniversary of National Chemistry Week, which is an outreach program, coordinated by the American Chemical Society.

National Chemistry Week is one of SEM Link’s favorite STEM themed weeks of the year because several members of both of our boards as well our Founder and Executive Director Ms. Tokiwa T. Smith have degrees in biochemistry, chemistry or chemical engineering. “The purpose of National Chemistry Week is to raise public awareness of the importance of chemistry in everyday life.  By going out in the community and performing hands on demonstrations for K-12 students we are able to stay true to this goal while at the same time allowing us to inspire and motivate young students to see the impact that STEM has on their everyday lives” stated Dr. Kenyetta A. Johnson SEM Link Board of Director and Chemistry Professor “Many students can become intimidated by science and math, partially because they can’t connect how the concepts they learn in class relate to the real world.  This demo’s allows us to inspire and motivate students and hopefully encourage them to pursue a future in STEM fields.”

If you would like to make a financial contribution to support this outreach effort to connect youth to chemistry professionals, we are accepting contributions to our “Donate Your Lunch Money” Individual Donor Campaign between now and November 2. Your tax deductible contribution can be made online via our National Chemistry Week Campaign website https://co.clickandpledge.com/?wid=58599  or by mailing your check or money order to made payable to SEM Link to P.O. Box 30441, Oakland, CA 94604.
