Tacoma speculative fiction author and literary activist Robert A. Boyd announced today that The Written Wyrd has released the latest in his ongoing "Ic'nichi - Human Concord" saga, a work entitled "MacKenna: Confrontation".

The story takes place roughly one hundred and forty years in the future, and revolves around Admiral Brian A. MacKenna, survivor of the high-tech terrors of global warfare who endured a lifetime of bloodshed during The Collapse (the resource crisis bringing down our present civilization) and the years of chaos which followed.

His last military role was as the Admiral of earth's tiny space fleet during the Contact Crisis with the alien Ic'nichi.  Shortly thereafter he died of old age, but the Ic'nichi, who see his unique skills as a resource to be preserved, secretly recorded his memories shortly before his death.

Forty years later, he wakes up in a new body.  The Ic'nichi face a crisis: earth has been taken over by the fanatical racist Purity Movement, which is plotting war.  The humans pirated a copy of Mac's memories, and have a MacKenna of their own, which threatens to turn any war into a holocaust.

An old adversary, former head of the 'Dark Grays' (the Ic'nichi fleet) comes out of retirement to help him on a desperate covert mission to locate that recording and destroy it.

Haunted by the nightmares of his past, and resentful of having to face those nightmares again, he returns to earth to confront the evil in mankind's soul amid the ruins of Singapore.  There he meets his counterpart, and makes a horrible discovery about the fate of mankind.  The result is a desperate one man struggle against the massed might of the Purity Movement.

"MacKenna: Confrontation" is not so much a war novel, or an anti-war novel, as it is a study of the terrible human cost of war, and how the human spirit can rise above adversity.

ABOUT THE IC'NICHI

The Ic'nichi are a race resembling 'small bipedal dinosaurs' who live in a loose knit city-state society.  They are less violent than humans, and while they are far more powerful than mankind, they have no desire to aggress against us.  In the story, they are alarmed by the rising tensions with earth, and bring MacKenna back to life in the hope that he can help avert a catastrophic interstellar war.

ABOUT SPECULATIVE FICTION

Speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror) is the popular literature of ideas," Mr. Boyd stated.  "It asks 'why?', 'what will this lead to?', and 'is there a better way?' in a variety of forms which appeal to the mass market reader.  In this time when there is so much pressure for mindless conformity, encouraging people to think is more critical than ever.  This is what distinguishes Speculative Fiction from all other forms of popular literature."
