About the Amphion String Quartet
Hailed by The New York Times for their "precision, assertiveness and vigor" and the San Francisco Chronicle for their "gripping intensity...suspenseful and virtuoso playing", violinists Katie Hyun and David Southorn, violist Wei-Yang Andy Lin, and cellist Mihai Marica, first joined together for a performance at Sprague Hall at the Yale School of Music in February 2009. The overwhelmingly positive audience reception at this concert was the inspiration behind their mutual desire to pursue a career as the Amphion String Quartet. The ensemble has been selected to join the roster of the prestigious Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Two, beginning in the 2013 season. Most recently the Quartet has been named the 2012-13 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence at Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts. The ASQ has also been awarded the First Prize at both the Plowman Chamber Music and Hugo Kauder String Quartet competitions and the 2011 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition.

Notable appearances in the upcoming 2012-13 season include their Carnegie Hall debut (Weill Hall) as well as performances at the Phillips Collection in Washington DC, the TCAN Center for the Arts (MA), Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts and a tour of Northern California, among many others.

About the Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence
In 1999, Caramoor established the annual String Quartet-in-Residence program supported by major endowment gifts from The Ernst C. Stiefel Foundation.  The Ernst Stiefel String Quartet Residency gives Caramoor a chance to present a quartet each year for the advancement of its reputation and career, as well as to enhance the life of the Caramoor community.  During the fall and spring, the Residency includes participation in the Student Strings program involving schools in many of the local school districts. The Amphion String Quartet is the thirteenth Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence at Caramoor; previous quartets have included: the Linden String Quartet, the Jasper String Quartet, Avalon String Quartet, Miró Quartet, Pacifica Quartet, Rossetti String Quartet, the Daedalus Quartet, the Amernet String Quartet, the Jupiter String Quartet, the Parker String Quartet, the Escher String Quartet and the Ariel String Quartet.

About Caramoor
We built a home, my husband and I, not to be old or new, just to be beautiful.  And we built it for music. ~  Lucie Rosen

Caramoor, the country estate of Walter and Lucie Rosen, was where they built their home and filled it with treasures.  Enjoying the pleasure their friends took in the beauty of Caramoor with its art collection, gardens, and musical programs, in 1946 the Rosens established a public trust to open Caramoor to the community. Their musical evenings were the inspiration for the Caramoor International Music Festival, now in its sixty-eighth year, and the ongoing Music in the Rosen House series.

Since its founding, Caramoor has gained international renown as a cultural institution, presenting music of all types and inspiring artists and audiences alike.

Caramoor enriches the lives of its audiences through intimate, innovative and diverse musical performances of the highest quality.  Education is a valued component of Caramoor’s mission, and Caramoor offers programs for the mentoring of young professional musicians as well as curriculum-based programs for school children emphasizing music, history and visual and decorative arts.. Caramoor is often described as “a Garden of Great Music,” where audiences are invited explore the beautiful grounds and gardens, discover the fascinating collection of period rooms and antiquities, and enjoy beautiful music in the Music Room, Spanish Courtyard and Venetian theater.
