By: Power Ten, Inc. MAGS-in-a-Box, developed by Terragon Environmental Technologies Inc., with support from Power Ten, Inc., is heading to the 3rd Combat Logistics Battalion (CLB-3) on the island of Oahu on October 15, 2012 for initial training and operation. Scheduled to arrive in mid-November, Power Ten and Terragon will conduct initial training on the unit with CLB-3 Marines. Each MAGS unit can gasify the organic waste, paper, plastics, chemicals, metal, glass and wood waste generated by up to 1,000 Marines per day. The process, which is safe for communities and the environment, reduces the volume of waste by more than 95 percent. Carbon in the waste is converted to harmless char, a carbonaceous material that can be either used as a soil additive or safely landfilled, limiting the formation of substantial quantities of carbon dioxide. Upon completion of the initial training the unit will then be shipped in late December or early January by the USMC/CLB-3 to the Big Island of Hawaii and the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) for exercise Lava Viper from 9 January to 1 February 2013. While at PTA, the MAGS-in-a-Box will be field tested by Marine Forces Pacific Experimentation Center for reporting on its military suitability. After completion of the PTA field tests, MARFORPAC will continue to use MAGS-in-a-Box with follow-on uses being planned with possible participation in other exercises in the Pacific Rim including Cobra Gold, Talisman Saber, Balikatan, Keen Sword/Keen Edge, and Rim of the Pacific.
