Local Fitness Competitor Takes Important First Step to Building Her Brand
Katirya Nieves took the stage on 10/6 competing in the NPC Fitness Championships. The 21 year old was in her 1st competition. Competing twice that day she earned 2nd place. Her goal is to become her own fitness brand. With this win she's on her way.
The National Physique Committee (NPC) is the largest amateur bodybuilding organization in the United States. Amateur bodybuilders compete in various competitions from local to national. In order to compete on the professional level at a sanctioned event such as those produced by the International Federation of BodyBuilders (IFBB), you must first win a class at the NPC Nationals Championship. With her Class A 2nd place win last Saturday, Katirya Nieves took one giant step toward realizing her goal of being a top athlete in her sport.
Katirya Nieves is a focused athlete on a mission. She is the product of a generation that counts Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams and Gabby Douglas as role models. Women who are young, accomplished, financially comfortable, and most of all, embrace and promote the fact that they have risen to brand status. That is what Katirya Nieves is working toward. As the 21 year-old rises at 5 am to make the trip from her home on Staten Island to the gym, these are just some of the names that motivate her. Katirya is very proud of her Hispanic Puerto-Rican heritage, which is why she chose the name KatiryaFit as her brand. The name her parents gave to her is a derivate of the Taino Indian word for an ancient Indian elixir that was only consumed during celebratory events. And, while she is sometimes frustrated that many have trouble with the pronunciation (KAH-TEE-REE-
Katirya attends the Harlem campus of CCNY, where she is finishing up work on a Bachelor’s degree in Communications. She is hoping to use her concentration in Advertising and Public relations to help her gain sponsorship leading to a professional career in Fitness and Bikini competition. As an amateur she is hoping to establish herself as someone unique in the Fitness industry.
Her discipline extends to both her diet and her personal life. Whether there is a competition on the schedule or not, Katirya sticks to a strict diet that is designed to optimize her ability to withstand rigorous training.
While many of her contemporaries can be found enjoying youth and the nightlife that comes with it, Katirya would rather focus on using the evening downtime to research sponsorship opportunities, learn new strength and posing techniques, and study the branding strategies that have turned products into household names. She also manages her social media profile which includes a twitter feed @KatiryaFit and a blog Http://www.KatiryaFit.blogspot.com
On Saturday, October 6th, Katirya took the stage at the National Physique Competition at Brooklyn’s Grandview Ballroom. Along with others in her Class A division, she performed in the afternoon and evening competitions. As the judges began to weed out the competitors, it dawned on her that there were only two other people on stage with her. The next thing Katirya knew, it was a stage of two. Ultimately, Katirya walked away from her first ever competition with a second place trophy. Her next NPC competition is in early November. But it seems as though KatiryaFit is indeed on track to enter the American brand lexicon.
