How to Prevent Anaphylaxis From Occurring

Anaphylaxis is the most severe of allergic reactions and causes a reaction throughout the entire body.

Oct. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction to a food, insect, drug or other substance.  The first time a person is exposed to a specific substance, the immune system becomes ultra-sensitized to it. When they encounter that substance again, an allergic reaction could then occur. Anaphylaxis is the most severe of allergic reactions and causes a reaction throughout the entire body.
Symptoms that the body is experiencing anaphylaxis can include any of the following:
•   Abdominal pain
•   Difficulty breathing
•   Chest pain
•   Hives
•   Light-headedness
•   Palpitations
•   Slurred speech
•   Swelling
•   Unconsciousness
•   Wheezing
If an individual suffers with a severe allergy, there are a number of ways that they can prevent the situation from escalating. The following preparation tips will help:
•   If visiting a doctor’s office for medical treatment, be sure to inform them of any drug allergies. If allergy shots are given, always wait half an hour or so before leaving to make sure there is no allergic reaction.
•   Wear a medical wristband. When experiencing a severe allergic reaction, individuals often will not be physically able to inform anyone of their allergy, so having a medical wristband or necklace could be lifesaving.
•   Have an emergency kit with medications, epinephrine auto injectors or anything else needed if an allergic reaction were to occur. These kits should be with the individual anywhere they go.
Informing others and carrying an emergency kit are all helpful in the case that an emergency allergic reaction occurs. It is extremely important to have a medical wristband along with these other prevention methods in case you are unable to inform medical personnel or others about an allergy. Anaphylaxis symptoms occur quickly after contact with the allergen, so it may not be realized quickly enough to inform someone.  Providing information on a condition will allow EMT’S to work as quickly as possible to provide proper treatment and could make the difference between life and death.
