Odeon Press Revives ROADKILL, Chilling Favorite of the Nineties by Northwest Author
Today Odeon Press announced the release of ROADKILL, a gripping horror novel set in the Pacific Northwest, by area author Richard Sanford.
This unnerving thriller brings together an unlikely band of travelers, unknown to one another but bound together by a fateful event. Author Richard Sanford says, “I was inspired by something that we who live in the Northwest know and feel—this is a special area of the country for spiritual journeys. When we leave the comfort and safety of our urban environment, we quickly find ourselves in ‘big’ spaces. They touch us in ways we’re unprepared for—ways that can fill us with a sense of fear, and dread.”
Deep in the wooded Oregon foothills, a clan of survivalists swing pickaxes and sledges, hammering out their cave. They violate sacred ground, releasing a creature, long entombed. On a nearby stretch of lonely highway, travelers converge: a hot young attorney in heels and hose daydreaming about her playtime; a professor and his brood on an overdue vacation; a former star running back pushing sporting goods; a big rig driver on a last chance run. They know nothing of one another and yet, they are linked with an unbreakable chain of fate. Something is free, wheeling above them in the darkening sky, something terrible.
On a foggy, twisting strip of Oregon blacktop, a long-haul truck driver haunted by the bottle is fighting to stay sober. But somehow a young girl is standing by the road like a vision in his rear-view mirror. The slick foggy road is climbing. As the creature drops beneath a cloud, it picks out motion, senses blood. There is a shuddering drum beat of wings. The last chance run for all is only beginning.
On its deepest level, ROADKILL is a story of violation and retribution. It is also a pulse-pounding, horror fan’s delight.
In this suspense/horror novel, Sanford never allows blood and gore to take the place of thoroughly heart-pounding passages of escape and battle; and Sanford provides enough fleshing-out of his characters so that the reader never knows who might make it to the end of this particularly rocky road. In the tense battle/chase scenes… all the props are pulled out in a visual driving-through-
