is pleased to announce the publication of

Inside the Favelas: Rio de Janeiro
Douglas Mayhew

THIS first and extraordinary investigation by author/photographer Douglas Mayhew takes readers to places—both physical and intellectual--that most Brazilians themselves have never visited, never mind the rest of the world: the notorious shantytowns called favelas, ruled as fiefdoms by drug lords and other criminals, and which have sprung up illegally throughout Rio. This gifted photographer is the first to not only enter and to report, but has created a visual story to explain these environments through photos and essays.  Exhibitions planned for Geneva, Madrid, London, Germany, among others, in tandem with the Brazilian government, which has supported this project and it will facilitate its worldwide publication.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Author and photographer Douglas Healan Mayhew lives between New York City and Rio de Janeiro with his partner, Roberto, and their dog, Cairo.  His interest in favela worlds began when he worked as a volunteer in the children’s wing in one of Rio’s largest public hospitals.  He continues to work within the favela world context; his work emphasizes social responsibility through community action and dialogue.

CONTRIBUTORS:

Sergio Cabral, was initially elected Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro in 2006.  Governor Cabral, through his innovative and highly effective security initiatives and programs, is responsible for the transformation of Rio’s favela territories and for the new freedoms and restored civil rights that nearly 1.5 million citizens of Rio--once dominated by the narcotics industry--now enjoy.

Joao Mauricio de Araujo Pinho, an attorney by profession, is one of Rio’s greatest cultural benefactors.  He sits on the boards of innumerable arts institutions and his private collections of Seventeenth-, Eighteenth-, and Nineteenth-century European and Brazilian works of art have been exhibited internationally.  He is a past President of Rio’s Museum of Modern Art and currently serves as Vice-President of the museum’s Board of Directors. Joao Mauricio is renowned for his connoisseurship, generosity, insight and humor.

Douglas Mayhew will be a moderator for the 2012 Global Economic Symposium in Rio de Janeiro.
