Oct. 9, 2012 - PRLog -- UK headlines recently hinted at a slice of optimism as the services sector outperformed expectations in the month of August. This came as welcome news to businesses across the country but for recruitment technology supplier LogicMelon, it’s practically irrelevant. Throughout the recession they have gone from strength to strength, flying in the face of economists and journalists banging their same old drums. So what’s the secret to success? How does a business quadruple staff numbers and exceed turnover predictions in the worst recession since World War II?

According to LogicMelon Managing Director Darren Brown, it’s all about dedication. He says, “We started LogicMelon in 2009 - right at the beginning of the recession! But whilst many people wouldn’t have even contemplated starting a business, we’ve done the exact opposite - started and expanded.”  Having gained a combined 24 years of experience in the posting and tracking industry, Darren and his colleague Nick were determined to utilise their knowledge. Darren says, “Nick had been focussed on the technical developments in the recruitment industry whilst I had been managing some of the top 10 recruitment agencies in the world - we made a great team and were both focussed on one thing; innovation.”

It’s this shared focus and determination to succeed which has driven LogicMelon forward. In the recruitment software industry, forward-thinking is key as competition can be fierce. Darren says, “When we set up, we needed to gain an edge on our competitors. The gap in the market was for a supplier that offered flexibility to suit the client’s needs and workflow structures.” So is the answer to recession woes that simple? Adhere to the needs of the market? Darren says yes and no; “At LogicMelon we are flexible and dedicated yes, but we also have a genuine interest in our industry. Every member of the team holds those same values and that’s what attracts and importantly, retains clients.”

Indeed, retaining clients allows for expansion and that’s why LogicMelon now works from two offices - one in Cambridgeshire UK and one in Johannesburg, South Africa. Darren says, “We have 11 staff members covering the two offices - that’s not bad when we started with just two! It’s great to be able to expand the team and in doing so, we gain new insights. Staff input is always welcomed and every idea is heard.”

All of this positivity is fantastic and sure to inspire many UK-based budding entrepreneurs, but there were inevitably some negatives along the way. Darren says, “If I could go back and change one thing, I would have spent more of our budget on marketing and PR. When we started LogicMelon, like many other businesses, we didn’t have a great deal of funding. With a tight budget, it’s easy to overlook aspects of the business which seem less of a priority. My advice to anyone setting up would be to get their marketing in-hand.”

With this in mind, LogicMelon’s growth and success is all the more impressive and it certainly doesn’t seem to be slowing down!
