California Association of Legal Document Assistants (CALDA) Marks 25th Annual Conference
Marty Omoto, Executive Director of the California Disability Community Action Network, will be the keynote speaker at the 25th annual conference of the California Association of Legal Document Assistants on October 19-21, 2012 in Sacramento.
Mr. Omoto will highlight the role of the professional Legal Document Assistants (LDA) as it relates to the legal community and to the future of the expanding profession with his topic, “How LDAs Can Grow this Profession.”
In 2000, SB1418 revised Business and Professions Code 6400 allowing LDAs or non-lawyers, formerly known as Independent Paralegals, to prepare legal documents for self-help litigants.
The Legal Document Assistant profession has come a long way since its inception. In these challenging economic times, the discerning public is becoming aware of the valuable services that can be provided by an LDA. As former CALDA President Marcel Neumann, stated, “We will continue to bridge the gap to justice by helping provide equal access to the Courts for all self-help litigants as well as a cost-effective legal alternative.”
According to Ian Duncan, 2012 CALDA President, the conference classes are designed for the experienced professional as well as someone thinking about entering the ever expanding role of an LDA. He states that the CALDA Conference attendees will be able to network with other professional, hear from Superior Court Judges, Commissioners and experienced attorneys. Classes will be offered to help increase the LDAs skills and to better prepare LDAs to meet the needs of the self-represented.
