Oct. 4, 2012 - PRLog -- The 82nd annual Fish Broil and Mullet Festival will be held Oct. 20, 2012 at Hurley Park, located between 15th Ave. & 16th Ave. in Pass-A-Grille, Fla. from 3 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Based on 2011 event attendance, a crowd of approximately 1,500 is expected for the 2012 event.

According to Nicole Wilson, director of the event’s primary benefitting organization, Montessori by the Sea, this is the school’s most attended fundraiser of the year.

“Every year, the community grows more enthusiastic about the festival, and the outpouring of support never ceases to amaze me,” Wilson said. “We’re very appreciative because our fundraisers allow us to grant financial aid to some of our families and help enhance our programs.”

Event chair, Karla Hollan, agrees. “We’ve been fortunate over the years, and local businesses do not hesitate to sponsor the event at some level,” she said. “We are really grateful to have many return supporters participating in this year’s event.”

In addition to the actual Fish Broil, done on bed mattresses to continue the Depression-era tradition, festivities will include live music, a Kid’s Zone with bounce houses and slides, face painting, a silent auction, raffles and much more.

Admission is free and includes access to the park, the vendor area for food and merchandise, the entertainment area and the silent auction. Mullet dinners are $8 each, and wrist bands for the Kid’s Zone are $5 each. Additional children’s activities are offered at varied small fees.

History of the Fish Broil
The Fish Broil began as a fundraiser for the Sunshine School in the 1930’s during The Great Depression. The fundraiser continued from one beach school to another as schools opened and closed over the years.

When the Sunshine School closed in the 1950s, they passed the Fish Broil on to Gulf Beaches Elementary. Then, when Gulf Beaches closed in 2009, Montessori by the Sea assumed the mantle of maintaining the tradition, which is well-attended by the community.

This year’s event proceeds will also help support the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum, St. Pete Beach Support Our Troops, Inc., Save Our Seabirds, Inc., The St. Pete Beach Public Library and beautification projects on Pass-A-Grille.

This year’s event sponsors include Senior Voice America, Black Palm, Boardwalk and Bert Smith Porsche.
