The Sporting Summer is Over, Now for the Shopping Winter

When I went to bed on Sunday night, Europe has just won their first point on the final day of the Ryder Cup to move to within three points of a US team who had dominated throughout, and although the odds were stacked against them, when I logged on in the morning to check the results, I was ecstatic, but not completely surprised.

This summer, sport has brought our little island, and I hope also the world outside, a renewed sense of optimism and positivity.  As the long, cold winter approaches, we somehow need to keep this fire burning, and take inspiration from it.  Sport isn’t high up on all of our lists of passions, but the ability of our small country to outperform its size, has made us all feel strong once more.

As the grey skies begin to appear, it is the economy once more, which is trying to steal us from our renewed optimism.  As the sporting achievements keep rolling on, the pessimistic focus on our finances is starting once again to battle for print space.  We need to fight it, however, and even if sport is not high up on our agendas, let’s take inspiration from our athlete’s will to win.
