Illinois General Assembly Passes Two New Radon Bills

Oct. 1, 2012 - PRLog -- Last month, the Chicago Sun-Times published a report about the Illinois General Assembly’s passing of two bills meant to protect residents from the hazards associated with radon exposure.

The first bill requires licensed daycare centers, daycare homes, and group daycare homes to test their property a minimum of one time every three years for radon.  This new legislation is effective January 1st of 2013.  The other bill goes into effect on June 1st of 2013 and will require new residential construction to have passive radon resistant construction.

Radon is a radioactive gas that is known to cause cancer.  It develops from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock and water.  The gas can move up through the soil and penetrate buildings through cracks, sumps and other holes in the building slab or foundation. Once inside, it can result in high levels of the gas that people breathe.  

The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today.  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “Exposure to radon in the home is responsible for an estimated 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year.”
