Bark Busters offers Halloween safety tips for families with dogs. Halloween can be a very scary time for dogs and a most dangerous one! Bark Busters has these tips for you and your dog’s safety:
♦ Keep your dog restrained! If your dog is timid or scared or loves people a bit too much, put him/her in a contained room, away from the front door. Be sure to leave food and water and a few favorite toys with them to feel safe.
♦ Keep your dog indoors, even if you have a fenced in yard. They can be easily frightened by costumes, remember, your dog’s instinct is to protect YOU from strangers!
♦ Let your dog get used to costumes. Your dog loves your family members, but in costume, they are strangers. Also, a few days before Halloween, practice knocking on the door or ring the door bell and say “Trick or Treat”. This will get him/her to understand and expect what will be happening.
♦ See if your dog likes to wear a costume. They usually don‘t like to be dressed up so, if they resist..Don’
♦ You must be in control of the dog at all times! Dogs don’t understand that costume strangers are not there to hurt you. They may act aggressively to protect you.
♦ Be sure your dog is properly tagged with name and contact numbers and a rabies tag. If your dog is micro-chipped, have that number and your veterianian’
♦ CANDY!!! DANGER!! WRAPPERS!! CHOCOLATE!!♦
Chocolate is posionous to dogs! Do not let them near the candy bowl or the candy your little ones come home with. Also, be aware of any wrappers on the floor or outside. You don’t want to go the the Vet. ER in the middle of the night to have a blockage surgically taken care of.
Don’t allow your dog around lighted candels! Those wagging tails are a danger and can easily knock over a candle or pumpkin. Use a battery powered candle instead.
