-- If you look at a snapshot of the economy in our area you may be lead to believe that it's doing better. Unemployment has gone down since the same time last year and personal income has gone up. At the same time there are increases in the cost of living, which include utilities, gas for vehicles, medical bills and the list goes on and on. We see more and more new people coming to us for assistance. Some are previous donors and some are finding themselves in situations where they're having to make hard choices. Choices like deciding whether to purchase new clothes for kids or paying for medication that is needed. This year we expect an increase in the need for holiday assistance. We want to not only share how you can receive assistance this year, but we also want to share the many ways you can be of assistance.
First, I'd like to share with those of you that may either need assistance or know of others who may need it. In addition to the towns of Malden, Medford and Everett we are pleased to announce that our local area of service is expanding to also include Melrose. This begins on October 1 2012.
So how do you see if you qualify for assistance? First, you need to show proof that you're a resident of our service area. This is accomplished by providing an ID for Head of Household, ID for all adults and birth certificates for children who live in the household. Next, you need to provide all income information for everyone who is eligible to work within the household. For example, pay stubs, SSI/SSD letter, Child Support letter and any other documentation that will show the total household income. We also need proof of all household expenses. Some examples of this are rent receipts, lease, mortgage payment, all utilities, phone, cable and any other documentation that will show the total household expenses. The application process will begin in October. You must call 781-324-1970 to make an appointment. So how do you know if you are eligible for assistance? As long as you've provided all the documentation at your initial appointment you will know right on the spot. If you are eligible, you will be given directions as to when and how to receive a Thanksgiving food basket and Christmas toys. If you're a single person household you will qualify for a Christmas food basket.
So what if you'd like to assist us during the upcoming holidays? Well there are many opportunities available. Things such as Pre-Thanksgiving/
Christmas Food Drives, Thanksgiving/
Christmas Client Intake, Food Basket Preparations, Angel Tree drop offs/pickups and the Toy Shop.

We are all still continuously facing tough economic times. Times where we have to make decisions and choices that will have a direct affect on our lives. This holiday season we want you to know that we will be "Doing The Most Good". We know how difficult it is to just barely get by and we also know that people care about helping others. So this holiday season whether your someone who needs a little help or you're able to give a little help know that you can look to The Salvation Army for both of those things. May you feel the presence of God not only during this season, but all throughout the year.
About The Salvation Army The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church established in 1865, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination for 129 years in the United States. Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children.
