GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Patients at Serious Risk of Heart Attack and Death

Sept. 27, 2012 - PRLog -- Patients who received dialysis treatments using Fresenious Medical Care’s  (FMC) products GranuFlo or NaturaLyte are at serious risk for heart attack and death.  The FDA has issued a Class I recall of GranuFlo and NaturaLyte after over 900 initial cases of heart attacks during dialysis treatment.  A Class I recall is the FDA’s most serious recall, issued only in cases with an extremely high probability of death or serious adverse health consequences.

Both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are defective solutions that were used to remove toxins from a patient’s bloodstream.  These solutions were mixed with bicarbonates to reduce the amount of acid buildup in the blood.  However, the mixture proved toxic when it was discovered GranuFlo and NaturaLyte contained increased bicarbonates, which produced an overdose in patients.  

FMC was aware of the potential for overdose and subsequent heart attack risk.  An internal memo that was leaked to the FDA warned of “troubling findings” which they shared with doctors in their network.  They did not share this information with over 125,000 patients receiving care at non- FMC clinics. And they did not make the public aware of these risks until their internal memo was leaked to the FDA.
