New Book Comapres Dobbs Ferry's Past to Present
Local author Judith Doolin Spikes teams up with photographer Anne Marie Leone on history of area.
Dobbs Ferry takes its name from the operator of a primitive ferry that in Colonial and Revolutionary days provided the first passage across the Hudson River north of New York City. In the 19th century, the river and the new castles built on its banks attracted tourists who christened the area “the heart of the American Rhine.”
Highlights of Dobbs Ferry:
• The majority of the vintage images were lent by the Dobbs Ferry Historical Society.
• Dobbs Ferry has been the home of tycoons or celebrities as Henry, Fanny, and Oswald Villard, Michael Todd, Jr., Dudley Field, Rex Beach, Edwin Gould, and Mark Zuckerberg.
• The book contains images of 86 sites within the village, facilitating a visual explanation of how and why the village was born and grew.
