Sept. 25, 2012 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s Then & Now series is Dobbs Ferry from local authors Judith Doolin Spikes and Anne Marie Leone. Spikes and Leone coauthor a weekly then-and-now column in the Rivertowns Enterprise. The book boasts more than 200 vintage and modern images, chronicling the growth and change of this New York village.

Dobbs Ferry takes its name from the operator of a primitive ferry that in Colonial and Revolutionary days provided the first passage across the Hudson River north of New York City. In the 19th century, the river and the new castles built on its banks attracted tourists who christened the area “the heart of the American Rhine.”

Highlights of Dobbs Ferry:
•   The majority of the vintage images were lent by the Dobbs Ferry Historical Society.
•   Dobbs Ferry has been the home of tycoons or celebrities as Henry, Fanny, and Oswald Villard, Michael Todd, Jr., Dudley Field, Rex Beach, Edwin Gould, and Mark Zuckerberg.
•   The book contains images of 86 sites within the village, facilitating a visual explanation of how and why the village was born and grew.

Comparing our present to our past is how we understand our history.  Arcadia’s Then & Now series makes such local comparisons available.  Books in this series offer a special view of American life, placing historical images side by side with contemporary photographs.
