Why:

In a recent graduation speech, President Barack Obama said, “The nation that excels in science and math and technology… is going to be the nation that rises to the top in the 21st century.”

Together with the Motorola Solutions Foundation, SBPLI is looking to provide an environment for students to excel in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through innovative programming that will provide students across the United States a hands-on, interactive experience with STEM education.

Each year, SBPLI puts on the Long Island Regional FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition at Hofstra University. Here, students learn about problem solving, teamwork and gracious professionalism. The purpose is to generate students’ interest in science, mathematics, engineering and technology so they can go on to study those subjects in college and, upon graduation, pursue a career in those same fields.

SBPLI was among more than 85 STEM organizations across the U.S. that received funding from the 2012 Motorola Solutions Foundation's Innovation Generation grant program. This year, the Foundation provided $4.9 million in grants to 87 organizations across the U.S. The 2012 grants will affect more than 178,000 students and teachers, providing nearly 18 million hours of STEM learning for the 2012-2013 grant year.
