Sept. 17, 2012 - PRLog -- Emterra Environmental, Halton Region, Tim Horton’s, Stewardship Ontario and a select Burlington neighbourhood will begin the process of determining if millions of coffee cups currently destined for landfill can be recycled instead. Halton Regional council is forging ahead with a three month pilot to collect hot beverage containers as part of the blue box program in the Palmer Community in Burlington, Ontario. The community was chosen based on its proximity to Emterra Environmental’s material recovery facility (MRF), where recyclables are sorted and processed.

Halton Region estimates that each Halton household throws away almost 2.5 kilograms of hot beverage paper cups annually, and the potential benefit of recycling those cups is exceptional. The opportunity to recover what is otherwise deemed waste across the province and beyond will be assessed by Stewardship Ontario.

Emterra Environmental, part of the Emterra Group family of waste management companies is headquartered in Burlington, Ontario and also operates the MRF that processes blue box collection. The challenge in the past was that MRFs couldn’t process these specific beverage cups primarily due to their plastic laminate coating. Emterra Environmental’s recycling processes will extract the paper fibre from the plastic film.

At the conclusion of the study period ending December 13, 2012, Stewardship Ontario and partners will assess levels of success.  The potential opportunity to drastically increase hot beverage paper cup recyclables has all partners excited and communities across Ontario and beyond watching.

As a Canadian leader in waste diversion and recycling for 35 years, the Emterra Group (http://www.emterra.ca) of companies continue to innovate and establish partnerships for greener, healthier communities as part of their “zero waste” mission.
