Sept. 14, 2012 - PRLog -- Waste management publication, “The Stewardship Gazette”, features Emterra Group and founder Emmie Leung in its September 2012 issue. The article, titled “Emterra Celebrates 35 Years”, traces Leung’s roots and entrepreneurialism back to 1976 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This is where Leung recognized “garbage” destined for landfill was actually recoverable waste – material there was a viable market for abroad.

The article cites the challenges many entrepreneurs face, including the requirement to wear many hats – from loading trucks to CEO duties in Leung's case. Remarkably, she transformed her ambitious idea into a company that today is 800 employees strong and growing.

Emterra now operates three single-stream material recovery facilities (MRFs) with its fourth in Saskatchewan under construction. An additional nine MRFs provide municipalities and commercial customers dual-stream recycling.

Innovation in waste recovery and management are Emterra’s strengths and part of the vision for the future. Emterra (http://www.emterra.ca/) frequently engages in pilot projects with municipal partners to increase the amount of waste diversion from landfills.  In Langley, BC Emterra is currently testing the viability of accepting polystyrene and plastic film as part of the normal curb side collection program.

The Gazette article also cites Leung’s numerous industry and Canadian business awards and achievements. This now includes the Rosie Award, a North American award bestowed by Waste and Recycling News that recognizes women who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the waste and recycling industry.

Under Leung’s 35 years of leadership, Emterra Group (http://www.emterra.ca/) continues to work towards achieving “zero waste” through innovation and expanding its national footprint and programs.
