Sept. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- Researchers recently conducted a survey concerning the awareness and use of electronic cigarettes. According to HappyHealth.net the results of the study published in the September 2012 issue of the “American Journal of Public Health” claims more than 40 percent of poll participants knew about e-cigarettes. Understandably, awareness ranked highest among current smokers.

The analysis also suggests that an increasing number of current and former smokers converted to using the artificial nicotine delivery system over satisfying an addiction by smoking conventional tobacco products. Young, Caucasian smokers were most likely to view electronic cigarettes as a safe and viable alternative.

Developed by a Chinese pharmacist, electronic cigarettes consist of the hollow atomizer cylinder that resembles a cigarette. Within the cylinder lies a rechargeable lithium ion battery and the nicotine cartridge. The cartridge contains nicotine, propylene glycol, and vegetable derived glycerin.

When heated by the battery, the contents create a nicotine filled water vapor that smokers inhale. Manufacturers create e-cigarette cartridges with varied levels of nicotine comparable to the amounts commonly found in full-flavor to ultra light cigarettes. Cartridges might also contain various fruity, menthol or other flavors.

While using the product, smokers satisfy nicotine cravings without the hundreds if not thousands of additional carcinogenic chemicals used for treating tobacco. The electronic nicotine system does not emit smoke or other harmful toxins, creating a health hazard to individuals or the environment.

Konstantinos Farsalinos, M.D., a physician affiliated with an Athens, Greece cardiac surgery center, conducted a small independent study in August 2012 concerning electronic cigarettes. Dr. Farsalinos discovered that e-cigarettes do not create blood vessel constriction compared to conventional treated tobacco and sees the product as an adequate smoking cessation alternative.

Happy Health  notes that other health care providers caution that as nicotine filled cartridges have not undergone extensive research for long term effects or received approval by regulating organizations, there remains no guarantee of quality or safety control.

The expense and potential health hazards associated with smoking causes many to consider quitting the habit. However, the addictive effects of nicotine pose an obstacle for many. Besides, the physical habit of smoking, nicotine withdrawal commonly includes cravings, irritability and possibly headaches. The metabolism slows and combined with combating cravings, individuals often increase dietary intake, which results in weight gain.
