Sept. 12, 2012 - PRLog -- Winning an impressive six award categories together with a swag of finalist placings, Doug Ryan, executive officer of Tourism Port Douglas & Daintree (TPDD), said the results proved the depth of talent in Port Douglas’ dining precinct.

“Our region continues to grow its reputation as one of the best places to dine in Queensland. This is down to the talented teams of people including chefs and front of house, who put so much time and effort into the dishes they create and service they offer.

“The Restaurant & Catering Awards are recognised as one of the most prestigious honours to those who work in the industry,” Mr Ryan added.

Top accolades went to Lure Restaurant & Bar as the winner of best café restaurant and the prestigious 2012 Northern QLD consumer vote. It was also a finalist in best breakfast restaurant and restaurant wedding caterer.

Salsa Bar & Grill received two awards as the winner of best contemporary Australian restaurant – informal and best restaurant wedding caterer.

Port Douglas stood out in the seafood restaurant category with 2 Fish Restaurant winning the overall award. Two of the three finalists in the category included the Port Douglas based Finz Seafood Restaurant and On the Inlet Seafood Restaurant.

Andy Gray, owner of Bel Cibo, was the recipient of best Italian restaurant. For Andy, who opened his restaurant in November 2009, he is “over the moon”. “A lot of it comes down to the fact that we have a good passion for what we do. From the kitchen, it is important we are putting out exceptional quality dishes that exceed people’s expectations.

“From the service side of things, I have an exceptional French manager who shares the same philosophy as me. When people come to Bel Cibo it is like welcoming them into your home – we want them to feel relaxed and really enjoy the experience,” he added.

Other notable finalists included The Kitchen at the Port Douglas Surf Club for best restaurant in a pub/club/tavern, Port Douglas Catering and Events for best wedding caterer offsite and Whet Restaurant in Cape Tribulation for best contemporary Australian restaurant – informal. Hi Tide Cafe-Bar-Restaurant was also a finalist for best breakfast restaurant and best restaurant in a hotel/motel/resort. One of Port Douglas’ newest additions to the dining scene Seabean Cafe Restaurant was also recognised as a finalist for best new restaurant.

The Awards for Excellence are judged by a team of trained judges who anonymously visit venues to determine the winners. This year saw a hotly contested program with the best of the best receiving winner’s acclaim. Restaurants were fielded into four regions, Northern Queensland, Brisbane/ Darling Downs, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Caterers competed within Northern Queensland and South East Queensland regions.
