Sept. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- A new company in southwest Texas and southern New Mexico is boasting higher cure rates for treating toenail fungus than were previously available with oral medication alone.  Southwest Laser Care, PLLC recently opened in El Paso, TX and Alamogordo, NM and is using their Q-Switched ND:Yag laser to treat various skin conditions, including nail fungus.  The CEO of Southwest Laser Care, Dr. David B. Williams, says this treatment is a blessing for number of his patients. "We have quite a few patients whose nails are too thick for topical therapy and who can't take oral medications for a variety of reasons.  Maybe they are already taking a lot of pills, or maybe they have illnesses that prevent them from taking the medication.  Laser treatment is perfect for these patients."

The Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, the scientific journal for foot doctors, published a study on laser therapy for the treatment of toenail fungus and found that after four laser treatments, 85% of the nails showed new growth without fungus.  "When you compare that to reported cure rates of 81% from oral therapy, the results are very significant," says Dr. Williams.  The Wall Street Journal also published a story in which they quoted PinPointe, one of the companies that produces lasers to treat toenail fungus.  PinPointe told the Wall Street Journal that 71.4% of the patients treated in their study experienced continuous improvement over a year after just one session with their laser.

Nail fungus has always been troubling for patients and very hard to treat successfully.  Laser treatment gives the patients safe, effective treatment without harmful side effects and long term treatment regimens.  "To my knowledge, no other doctor is offering this treatment in Alamogordo, NM and I haven't seen any other doctor promote this treatment in El Paso, TX," say Dr. Williams.  He adds, "If I had this problem, this is the first thing I would want to use to get rid of it."
