Sept. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- September is National PCOS Awareness month.  For many women, PCOS can be the reason they struggle to conceive, as it is the most common cause of infertility.    PCOS stands for polycystic ovarian syndrome, and occurs when women have hormonal imbalances and fluid filled sacks or cysts on their ovaries.   Dr. Stephanie Singleton, a reproductive endocrinologist with Southeastern Fertility Center explains PCOS.  She states, “PCOS or polycystic ovarian syndrome affects more than 5 million women in the United States.    It is the most common cause of infertility.   The good news is that once diagnosed it can be addressed.  At Southeastern Fertility Center, we treat patients with PCOS and help them reach their goal of starting a family.”
Women that are struggling to conceive are tested at Southeastern Fertility Center for PCOS.   Many women with PCOS have irregular menstrual cycles.  It can be diagnosed through discussion of the patient’s history, a physical exam, a pelvic ultrasound and laboratory evaluations.   PCOS is diagnosed, it indicates a hormonal imbalance that affects the ability to ovulate and conceive.  States Dr. Singleton, “Once we diagnose PCOS, there are steps we can take at Southeastern Fertility Center to help treat the syndrome.  There are fertility medications that can help stimulate ovulation and in most cases conservative therapy such as ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination may be utilized.  Most women with PCOS are able to conceive and start a family after treatment.”
