Summer's Waiting For You and Your Life

Sept. 10, 2012 - PRLog -- So sometimes, people meet me and say, "OK, so you're The Distinctive Life Guy, but you're also a funeral director. What do you know about having fun? Aren't all funeral directors always dressed in black suits and driving hearses?"

Here's the deal: my original career choice was to be a comedian. The story of how I ended up as a funeral director is a good one, and I promise to share it someday. Let's just say this for now - my dad wasn't willing to support my comedic dreams OR my funeral director aspirations, mostly because he thought both were nuts. My dad is now one of Distinctive Life's Dallas funeral directors - who got the last laugh there, huh?

But I digress...I'd say I know more about having fun and living life than most people you'll meet. Why? Because I see death every day, and I talk with families who've lost loved ones every day. I've never had a family member tell me, "He spent way too much time having fun. I wish he'd been more serious and enjoyed life a little less."

Too often, I hear the opposite - and it's definitely had an effect on me. I cherish every moment I have with my wife, my daughter, my family (yes, even my originally-not-very-supportive-and-now-working-with-me dad), and my friends. I wake up every day and focus on doing at least one thing to make a memory - even a small, silly one - that my family and friends will fondly remember after I'm gone. (I've cooked some strange breakfasts for my daughter over the years - wish I'd gotten photos of a few of my creations!)

So this weekend, I'm going to take my wife out on a date, let my daughter beat me up on the volleyball court (OK, so she usually smashes me into the ground - humor my fragile ego here), do some volunteer prep work for the 2012 Maccabi Games (August 5-10 right here in Houston, BTW - don't miss it!), then kick back with some sort of boat drink and just enjoy the sun.

If a family needs me, I'll be there. But in the meantime, I'll be making a great summer memory and living my distinctive life. Will you?
