Sept. 5, 2012 - PRLog -- There’s a jam-packed programme of activities, demonstrations, conferences and a trade exhibition awaiting visitors to the Airports Company South Africa Disability Lifestyle Trade Expo and Conference. This unique event takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre from 6 to 8 September.

One of the many fun activities taking place is a series of cooking demonstrations presented by members of the South African Chefs’ Association (SACA). The search is on for some daring chefs with disabilities who can create the coolest cupcake or the best biscuit. This is the first time the association is taking part in the expo.

“It’s not just about choosing the right ingredients but also creative expression,” says Charl Kriek, events co-ordinator for the SA Chefs’ Association. “We will be giving cupcake decorating and biscuit baking demonstrations to small groups of people, and then letting them loose to create their own confectionary masterpieces!”

Some of the best chefs in the land will be available to offer help and advice. One of them is Neil Olverman, who has been a professional chef for 16 years, and now works on developing new products for Unilever.

“Throughout my career I have always remembered two things,” says Neil. “Firstly, if you don’t have some fun while cooking in the kitchen every day, you are not allowing your creativity to develop! Secondly, learn something new every day, even if it seems trivial. It will be important one day.”

Another hot chef who will be giving culinary advice to aspiring cooks is Thandi Maphai, who earned a B.Com Degree in Marketing before following her passion to become a chef.

She completed a Diploma in Professional Cookery with Capsicum Culinary Studio while working as resident Chef on the YoTV Breakfast Show, and hosting her own show, ‘Boy Meets Grill’, on the same channel. She is currently resident Chef for a community TV Station, Stokvel TV. She has lectured on cooking and also made several training videos, and worked alongside heavyweight chefs such as the legendary Stephen Billingham.

Other top chefs who will be available to talk about food, health and disability are Clinton Verhoog from Delectables in Woodmead; Dewald Kotze, training manager for SACA; Jelele Mokhine, executive sous chef at the Park Inn, and Leanne Middlewick, executive chef at the famous Wanderers Club.

Lots to See and Do
In addition to the cooking challenge, there are many other interesting activities to be seen at the show. From sports, arts and crafts to inspirational speakers – there is something from everyone at the Airports Company South Africa Disability Trade and

Lifestyle Expo.
The popular Disability Trade Expo features dozens of companies showcasing the latest assistive products and services.
“The show features a wide representation of assistive products and services for people of all ages and encompassing the full spectrum of disabilities,” says Bette McNaughton, organiser of the show. “The exhibition enables people to meet suppliers and get first hand advice and guidance on their products and services. In addition, many organisations in the disability sector will be on hand to answer any questions on the services they have to offer.”
