Beware: Fraudulent Sky Callers Want Your Bank Details!

Several cases of fraud attempt by a company claiming to be SKY TV have been recently reported to Tellows. The scammers are calling and facing SKY customers with financial matters in order to get their personal information and bank details.

Sept. 4, 2012 - PRLog -- Tellows is back to bring you the latest news on a new fraud method circulating in the UK. Scammers pretending to work for SKY TV or companies related to SKY are calling (former) sky customers, claiming their package had to be renewed or their bills had not been paid. It might sound logical in the first place, but all these fraudsters want is to get people's bank details!

Scam attemts have namely been reported from the following numbers:

01332387201
01332387203
01275390584
01275390573
02392450028
02920190900
0133238720
and others – have a look at http://www.tellows.co.uk!

The caller pretends to be an employee of SKY TV or a company installing the gear for SKY. All calls show a similar structure: fist you will be confronted with some financial matter. Either you have not payed your SKY fee or you are paying too much and should get money back. Second part: you will be asked for your details.

However, the SKY-scammers' methods are varying by the time. User Kim Kaze reported the following situation to Tellows:

"Someone called my man whilst I was out, claiming NOT to be actually from Sky but from the company that covers the sky box.

I pressed them and they said they were from '1eoc' company and they are 'working with Sky'. They claimed my warranty for the box was running out and that I'd got it insured last year and should now repeat that. I was suspicious and so asked about things and why for example, I had no memory of this payment and that they had nothing on record about me (they said they delete things after the payment is made for data protection reasons), nor did they give me any account number or date that I made this previous payment. I asked why don't they send out stuff in writing and they said they get poor returns on letters. I also said I don't recall making the payment and they said 'maybe you did it by monthly installments' and when I told them I cut them all out they backpeddled.

I then asked for a secure way to know who they were and they offered to put me through to the Customer department (whatever that means) I was then put through to some other very young lady who didn't know what I was telling her at all. They tried to push me and in the end I told them no and rung off. They gave me this number to call - 0844 6932855. The number they called me on however was 01275 390584!

I checked google for 1eoc ... they have a rubbish, cheap website that looks like a child made it in 30 minutes and it is a RESELLING ELECTRICAL HARDWARE SITE. So they take your stuff and flog it. Nice ppl."

Here are some simple advices how to notice that this is a scam call:

Credit card details and other personal information should never be mentioned during a cold call. The caller should know at least the customer's name and address, if it really is a legitimate company.
The caller is obliged to introduce him/herself with name, job title, company and telephone number
Telephone numbers should be written down and reported to tellows.co.uk
Legitimate companies do contracts in a written way and never ask for personal details and financial matters on the phone
