Aug. 30, 2012 - PRLog -- The BMW i8 Sypder, a hybrid concept car, is set to appear at the upcoming L.A. Auto Show. The manufacturer says the hybrid will achieve 70 mpg. A 170-hp electric motor drives the front wheels, while a 3-cylinder combustion engine powers the rear axle. Until this latest announcement, the i8 was slated to make its next showing at the New York Auto show, but BMW decided to speed up the emergence of the popular concept. When it goes on display in Los Angeles, the futuristic hybrid is expected to feature several updates. The BMW i8 can drive up to 20 miles in all-electric mode and accelerate to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. The original story is here:

The president released the final version of the federal 2025 fuel economy mandates this week, which means that average ratings for cars and light trucks must be at 55 mpg or better. While many automakers initially resisted the law, most major manufacturers are now on board with the regulations. After the Arab Oil Embargo of 1971, the U.S. Congress acted to bring mileage numbers up in order to create national oil independence. The law has strict enforcement provisions for automakers whose vehicles fall below mandated mpg numbers. The full story is here:

Lexus will bring its concept hybrid LF-LC to the Australian Motor Show in October, which will mark the first time the vehicle has appeared in public since it debuted at the Detroit Motor Show in January. The all-wheel drive, 470-hp engine system will feature a silver exterior in Australia, unlike the bright red version in Detroit. While there has been no official word from Lexus about a production model, industry-watchers think the reappearance of the LF-LC at a major show hints at the carmaker’s intentions.
