BOMA San Diego To Host Active Shooter And Civil Unrest Workshop
Learn Best Practices from First Responders and Property Management Professionals
The workshop will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by the lunch portion of the event at noon on Tuesday, September 11 at the La Jolla Marriott Hotel located at 4240 La Jolla Village Drive. The workshop discussion, led by a panel of experts from the San Diego Police Department and other emergency preparedness agencies, will revolve around decision making and best practices in handling emergency situations. A clinical psychologist will also be on hand to answer questions and guide the discussion.
Attendees will be given several interactive scenarios prepared by panelists in which they must determine the best course of action for the safety of their building occupants. Panelists will then analyze responses, give feedback and steer building owners toward the best solutions for emergency preparedness.
"It's not a matter of if something will happen, but when." says Barry Garson, chairman of the BOMA Emergency Preparedness Committee. "Our goal is to energize our community to create plans for these eventualities and to take action. Preparation is everything."
The workshop is inspired by the actions of Rick Rescorla on Sept. 11, 2001. He worked quickly after the World Trade Center’s north tower was hit to begin immediate evacuations of the south building, despite urging from others to ask that everyone stay put. Rescorla was on his way up the building’s staircase to find more people to evacuate when the south tower collapsed. His courage, quick thinking and preparedness helped save more than 2,700 people that day.
"Rick is an example to us all," says Garson. "He trained his people for an emergency. We want to shed light on the importance of being prepared by honoring his heroic efforts during that horrible day."
BOMA members will share Rescorla’s story and hold a moment of silence for the victims of September 11 during the workshop. A plaque will be added to the Mount Soledad War Memorial in honor of Rescorla on November 10. This ceremony will be open to the public and attended by Rescorla’s family from the east coast.
