Aug. 27, 2012 - PRLog -- According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, “Healthcare-associated infections, or HAIs, are among the top 10 causes of death in the United States and cost in excess of $20 billion a year. These infections are acquired by patients during the course of receiving treatment for other conditions within a health care setting, including hospitals, nursing homes, ambulatory surgical centers, and community clinics. Many of these infections are preventable with appropriate healthcare practices.”
Several years ago, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued an “Action Plan to Prevent Health Care-Associated Infections” to combat this growing problem. Illinois has developed a comprehensive HAI Prevention Plan which lists goals for the state over the coming years. Specific HAI targets have been prioritized which include battling infections due to the microbial pathogens known as Clostridium difficile (C. diff), and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
One Illinois-based company that has been on the frontline in helping healthcare professionals indentify and prevent these HAIs is EC2, Inc. Ed Chambers, the President of EC2, is a leading indoor air quality (IAQ) and infection control expert who has decades of experience in identifying microbial pathogens and finding solutions to prevent human exposure. “These infections can be prevented in most circumstance,” he stated. “Healthcare-associated infections can be devastating and deadly, not to mention they add billions of dollars in medical costs to an already overburdened medical system. EC2’s indoor environmental experts can help identify microbial pathogens before an outbreak occurs or help pinpoint the source of an outbreak to prevent additional people from becoming ill.”
EC2 recently sponsored several public outreach videos about healthcare-associated infections and microbial pathogens that can be viewed at: http://youtu.be/FwO9oUFFIps
