Aug. 26, 2012 - PRLog -- The US Army Special Forces “Green Berets”; are America’s top soldiers. They spend years honing and developing their soldier skills before donning the coveted Green Beret. As the Barry Sadler song The Green Berets states, “Trained to live off natures land, Trained in combat hand to hand”. Special Forces soldiers are some of the most resourceful in the American arsenal. In 2003, a practical hand to hand combat program was born of the need for Special Forces soldiers to operate in harsh, austere conditions armed with their firearms, knives, clubs or just what they were born with.  Now this training that was once only available for military personnel is available to the public.

September 7th, The Academy of Combat Application Techniques in Fort Worth, will begin their next Military Combatives class. Registration for this class is going on from 25 August to 7 September, 2012.  This is not your average combatives class.  All candidates for this class must pass a criminal background check and cannot have felony convictions. Trainees will undergo a class on injury mitigation, Texas Penal Code, deadly force and escalation of force procedures. They must also pass a written exam with a passing grade of 85 percent or higher. Like the green berets students are selected by the head instructor a former Special Forces Soldier himself.

The program was developed and is taught by the “Academy of Combat’s” head instructor Andrew Curtiss. Curtiss began teaching Women’s Self Defense courses as an assistant to his Martial Arts instructor who is a police detective in Upstate New York; when he was fifteen years old. Curtiss now 34; Curtiss runs his own programs based on the research and development that he has done over the last 15 years. Curtiss says he was drawn to this type of program, because typically women are not as strong as a man and if a technique works for even the smallest and most meek woman then it should be extremely effective for a man. Curtiss used much of his experience in Women’s Self Protection training to develop a military combatives program for his Special Forces A- Team when he was asked to develop an efficient hand to hand combat program in 2003. This program was designed to be easy to learn and apply, be effectively used in low light conditions, without athleticism, against multiple attackers, in a state of poor health or injury and have commonality of training techniques in order to develop neuro pathways to make the techniques second nature.

Unlike many other “Combatives” programs out there, this one has been developed and applied to real combat. Curtiss is a dually published author and has written a book and published articles online about his program. Both he and his training center were featured in the April edition of the “Counter Terrorist” Magazine for his confined space defensive tactics course. This is the only program in the DFW area of its type. The Academy of Combat teaser on Youtube demonstrates a variety of their programs. See the teaser here

The fee is 35 dollars to register and 65 dollars a month to train.  Space is limited.
