Ohio Historical Society Makes Death Certificates and More Available Online

The new Ohio Historical Society online store opened last week. In addition to providing several interesting historical products and services, it also has links to online historical image and death certificate databases.

Aug. 16, 2012 - PRLog -- History buffs, listen up: In addition to providing historical products ranging from antique Ohio cookbooks to recreations of historical artifacts, the new Ohio Historical Society online store offers several new options. For one, you can register for cheap memberships in a few organizations associated with the OHS, like the Ohio Local History Alliance (Ohio LHA), the Ohio Council for Social Studies (OCSS), and the Ohio Academy of History. This new website also provides a link to OhioPix, which is a fantastic online database of thousands of historical images that you can purchase and download onto your computer. Simply add the images you want to your cart, and you can either purchase them as downloadable files or prints that will be mailed to your home. Photos in the database range from portraits of Harriet Tubman to photographs of the very first White Castle restaurant. Whether you want to learn more about the history of Ohio or American history in general, you will be able to find a few pictures that will pique your interest.

By far the most interesting an attention-grabbing new feature the OHS has added to its store is this: an online database of Ohio death certificates ranging from 1913 to 1944. You will find the link in bolded letters under the “Categories” column on the left side of the home page. The database is a very simple thing to navigate: just type in the name of the person you want to research, and you will be presented with several links to several different death certificates in the database. Select the ones you want, click the “Save Checked Records” button on the top of the screen, then click the “Show Saved Records” button just beside it. From there, you can clear the saved records from your list, email the list to a friend, or purchase a copy of the death certificate (they are just $7.00). Death certificates are great pieces of history and great to have in a family scrapbook, and they are absolute must-haves for true fans of history.

These options are not the only thing that’s new about this website. With the help of Web 2 Market and AbleCommerce 7, the Ohio Historical Society has managed to turn its simple online store into a more attractive and easier-to-navigate website that leaves its predecessor in the dust. This site features a more aesthetically pleasing layout and a greatly improved navigation system, in addition to an easier checkout process. Instead of having to search by keyword to find what you’re looking for, now you can easily browse through different product categories and add products to your cart with a simple click of the mouse. It is a completely new store in every way.
