Trip to Gettysburg Serves as Inspiration for New Series
Julie Hawkins was so enthralled by a visit to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania she was inspired to write the “Renegade Series,” four books that revolve around the Civil War.
“I wrote A Beckoning Hellfire after taking a trip to Gettysburg,”
“My main character, David Summers, is an exuberant, naive young man who fights for his homeland and his honor with the Confederate cavalry. Because I am a horse lover, I wanted to tell a story about the cavalry and what it was like to have to fight while balancing on top of a horse. A Beautiful Glittering Lie is the back story to why David enlists. It describes what his father, Hiram, went through while fighting with the 4th Alabama Infantry Regiment”
A Beautiful Glittering Lie addresses the naivety of a young country torn by irreparable conflict, a father who feels he must defend his home, and a young man who longs for adventure, regardless of the perilous cost.
Readers all across the United States are enjoying the series, including Civil War buffs, historians, and groups including the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
The author is confident this series will provide readers with an exciting, fast-paced story that they will certainly get caught up in. “Besides giving them a story whose characters they can empathize with, I want the books to provide an opportunity to teach them about an important event that changed the course of American history,” she said.
It generally takes Julie about a year to write each book. “Because it is historical fiction, there is an immense amount of research that goes into each one,” she said. “I strive to be as historically accurate as possible. Although the main characters are fictitious, nearly everyone and everything around them actually existed or took place.”
She has been a writer and illustrator all of her life. “After graduating from college, I married and moved to Colorado, where my husband and I raised two wonderful boys. My writing evolved and grew as they did: I started writing children’s books, then graduated to young adult, and finally to adult fiction and nonfiction. My stories have appeared in various publications and blogs. A Beckoning Hellfire is my first published novel, making A Beautiful Glittering Lie my second. I intend to keep writing and promoting myself, because it is a constant learning process.”
Julie is also a singer, songwriter and musician. “My band, ‘Julie Hawkins Band,’ has had one self-titled CD released, which is available on iTunes.
